why

Most of my work is oil and related media on canvas.

My general subject matter is exploring what it is that makes us human.  I like to think that I can play my part in defining,  illuminating, perhaps even criticising our humanity.  Our relationship with the visual world not only provides us with information  but also helps determine the attributes and quality of our awareness. What we do in life, how we behave, is influenced by that awareness together with our emotions, memories and imagination.

The content of my paintings is often based upon recognisable and familiar views and these usually involve some form of deconstruction.  Other works are wholly non representational.  I consider content to be important but I use it more as a means to refer to the subject matter rather than an end in itself.

My process of making pictures reflects the process in which I attempt to reveal the human element in what we see around us.  So rather than preparatory drawing or sketching,  I explore only on the canvas.  The end product involves the entirety of the process.  My language is that of colour, colour and shade variation, surface texture (strokes, scratches, dapples, smudges etc),  and mark making (usually non figurative).  The process creates a dialogue.  I interact with what is on the canvas, thus I become a maker, a viewer and responder.  I may even change the subject matter.

I measure success in my painting not just by any supposed aesthetic quality or accomplishment in composition which are nevertheless necessary, but mainly by a viewer's reaction.  What I want my work to do is to involve the viewer's memories, imaginations, emotions and cognitions in a way that helps them know themselves a little better.
