Nitogen dioxide    .......page under repair..............

Road traffic is responsible for half the total nitrogen dioxide emissions but domestic combustion is an important source as NO2 has short term effects when people are exposed to high concentrations. Long term effects from NO2 exposure from domestic combustion are possibly not important.
In the presence of sunlight, it reacts with hydrocarbons to produce ozone.

Health effects

Nitrogen dioxide is a respiratory irritant which is known to exacerbate asthma. There is a 3.5% increase in mortality for a 100ug/m3 increase in ambient NO2. There is a 5% increase in hospital asthma conditions for the same increase in NO2. Experiments on actual exposures show litte short term effect below 500ug/m3.

Exposure

Living with or close to domestic fires may expose you to peak concentrations in excess of 1000ug/m3.
